Packing for Croatia: The 5 Essentials You Must Have!
If it’s your first time traveling to Croatia and you’re unsure of what to expect and pack, follow this guide and save yourself from wasting precious vacation time shopping!
1. Water Shoes
Croatian beaches are mostly pebbly or rocky, and trust me, it’s way more comfortable to enter the sea slowly. As a local, I was once ashamed to wear water shoes, but in 2024 I finally succumbed and got a pair. They also protect you from sea urchins! If you forget to pack some, don’t worry—you can easily buy them on the beach from multiple vendors or at a store like Decathlon.
2. Cash
Some restaurants in Croatia are cash-only, and they'll likely let you know at the entrance or the waiter will mention it upfront. For souvenir shops, bakeries, and public transport, it’s convenient to have euros in small denominations. Salespeople appreciate coins, and if you try to pay a small bill with a 50-euro note, you’ll probably be asked for something smaller.
3. Snorkeling Gear
Don’t miss out on the underwater wonders just because you forgot your snorkels! Busy tourist beaches might have less clarity, but if you’re on a boat trip or a secluded beach, snorkeling is a must. It’s my favorite summer activity!
4. Mosquito Protection
In the summer, expect mosquitos. The buzzing can be a real sleep-killer, so bring an anti-mosquito plug for your accommodation and perhaps some anti-mosquito cream.
Extra Tip: If you forget any toiletries, visit a drugstore called DM. They have a great selection of BIO food, personal hygiene products, household supplies, makeup, perfumes, and more.
5. Flats!
Think you’ll rock high heels in the evenings? Think again! If you’re visiting an old coastal town, the alleys are usually cobblestoned and tough to walk on in heels. Even with flats, the stones can feel slippery. I always opt for flats and white sneakers.
